Chapter 5 – High-value export industry market dynamics
South Africa’s high-value horticultural sector has grown into a major contributor to agricultural export earnings, with citrus export revenue increasing from approximately US$80 million in 2001 to an estimated US$2.5 billion in 2025. While this growth reflects sustained investment, productivity gains and expanding international market access, it also highlights the sector’s growing exposure to global market conditions. As production continues to expand, market diversification and export competitiveness will become increasingly important in supporting sustainable growth.
